Officers are warning residents to remain vigilant following multiple reports of distraction thefts across the county.
Over the past week officers have been called to four separate incidents where shop workers have been targeted by distraction thieves who have stolen mobile phones. In each case the victims have been approached by an unknown man who was holding a sheet of A4 paper with foreign writing on it. The man has then distracted the victims with the paper while stealing their mobile phones.
So far incidents have been reported in Knutsford, Alderley Edge, Congleton and Lymm.
Detective Chief Inspector Karen Jaundrill said: “Enquiries into these incidents are currently ongoing and I’d ask anyone with any information to get in touch.“While these incidents have all involved shop workers so far, this type of crime can happen to anyone which is why we’re taking the opportunity to remind the public to be on their guard.
“Always ensure that your mobile is kept out of sight and if you are approached by a stranger in unusual circumstances, do not engage with them, particularly if they ask for directions or change. Be firm with them, walk away, and report any suspicious activity to the police.”
Anyone who sees suspicious activity or had any information should contact Cheshire Police on 101. Alternatively information can be given anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
