Esther McVey MP was involved in delivering the post when she joined a local postie on their delivery round in Wilmslow recently.
The Tatton MP was invited to see for herself the lengths Royal Mail goes to in delivering the UK’s mail. As valued members of the local community, our postmen and postwomen deliver letters and parcels in all weathers six days a week, across the UK.
Opportunities like this are designed to give MPs a unique insight into the challenges of delivering mail to every house and business in their constituency, six days a week. It also gives them an opportunity to see how the rise in e-commerce has boosted the number of parcels in the daily round.
Darren Taylor Royal Mail Delivery Manager at Wilmslow Delivery Office who briefed Esther before she set off on his delivery round said: “We’re delighted that Esther McVey MP is taking the time to experience the every day challenges faced by our postmen and postwomen who are so often at the heart of their communities.
“The visit gave us the opportunity to show Esther how we are continuing to modernise and transform our organisation. We have invested in new sorting and delivery equipment as we respond to the changing nature of the modern postbag. We’re also continually looking to make our services even better to give customers greater convenience as they shop online.””
Ms McVey said: “Postmen and postwomen perform an incredibly important role in our communities across my constituency, not just delivering letters and parcels, but also for being part of an organisation that plays such a key role in keeping the UK connected.
“I wanted to get a real understanding of the work that goes into delivering the mail on a daily basis. There can be no better way of getting that insight than actually going out and doing the job alongside a postman or woman. I joined local postie Gareth Trimble who has been delivering mail for 30 years.”
Royal Mail is continuing to modernise its operation, which means every part of the process from collecting, transporting, sorting and delivering the mail is being improved to further increase efficiency. The Company has also increased the number of notifications customers receive in order to bring greater levels of convenience.
