An MP is encouraging school children to get involved in a competition to celebrate inspirational British figures.
Esther McVey’s Great British Heroes competition invites primary school children across the constituency to draw or write about a person who has inspired or motivated them.
She said: “This is about celebrating great historical figures. The aim of the competition is to encourage pupils to learn about extraordinary citizens who did something remarkable. We have excellent examples of heroes on our doorstep in the form of former Cheshire resident and code-breaker Alan Turing who during the second world war worked for the government breaking enemies codes and more recently multi-gold winning cyclists, Laura and Jason Kenny
Ms McVey will judge the competition, along with Molly Barnhill who starred in the film 'BFG', Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire David Briggs MBE, Val Bryant, historian and manager of the Knutsford Heritage Centre and Mike Roberts from Roberts Bakery in Northwich.
Winners from each year group will be chosen and prizes presented before the summer holidays.
Ms McVey added: “I look forward to looking at the entries and seeing who the children pick as people who have motivated or inspired them.”
Entries must be submitted by Friday April 26 and sent to Ms McVey’s office at 84 Chapel Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5JH.
