Tatton MP, Esther McVey is keen to provide support for East Cheshire Hospice and she recognises the valuable service that the Hospice provides for patients throughout this area of Cheshire.
To that end, Esther met Ned Spencer of the Wilmslow support branch recently to talk about their upcoming event, Beating the Bounds. Beating the Bounds historically was an event that used to take place in all parishes in England every Spring, where people would walk the parish boundary to check all was in order. Bearing the Bounds in Wilmslow has now been resurrected as a fundraising event to help the hospice and is now in its third year.
Starting and finishing at Wilmslow Rugby Club, the event takes place on Sunday May 19th this year. The full walk (which takes you as near to the old parish boundary as you can get today) is approximately 15 miles and there is also an 8 mile version, for the less ambitious and the opportunity to run the route for the slightly fitter members of the community. All versions will help raise valuable hospice funds.
A number of local companies also enter a team and treat the event as as fun, team-building event/
Esther comments:
“I continue to be amazed at the variety of events that are put on to support the work of the Hospice and Beating the Bounds is no exception. I love the fact it is based on an historic tradition, bought up to date with the addition of a variety of refreshment breaks along the way! I have been talking to the Hospice about their @home scheme, which if fantastic so anything that helps them continue that work has to be applauded’
Organiser Ned Spencer says:
“We are seeing support for Beating the Bounds from all sections of the community. It promises to be a great day out – and raise funds for East Cheshire Hospice. Mottram Hall has very kindly offered a free SPA DAY voucher for each participant, the Great Little Red Bus will be providing teas & coffees at the start, 15 mile walkers will receive free lunch at The Merlin and 8 mile walkers will be given a picnic lunch.
There are 3 refreshment stops on the 15 mile walk and all walkers meet at the end for a BBQ. We have some beautiful countryside on our doorstep – we are so lucky to have this opportunity.”

Esther is considering entering a team from her constituency office next year; there is time for them to get prepared as she is sure to want to do the 15 mile version!
