Esther McVey is backing Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign and hopes groups and organisations across the area will get involved and apply for funding to get people moving.
Sport England first launched the National Lottery funded campaign in 2015 after research found 75 per cent of women wanted to do more sports or exercise but were put off by the fear of being judged on ability or body.
Ms McVey said: “I’m proud to support Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign to get more women and girls active and the new adverts as part of the campaign show there is something for everyone if they want to take part, regardless of age or ability.
“I’d urge local groups and organisations, not just sports clubs, but any community groups who work with women or girls and want to arrange activities or classes to apply for funding from Sport England and The National Lottery and of course I will offer any support they need in making their applications.
Since the campaign began nearly three million women have taken up more sport or physical activity.
This Girl Can Community Fund is offering grants of between £300 and £10,000 to 50 community groups and projects across England who are creating opportunities to get women moving.
Applications close on February 25 and for more information visit www.thisgirlcan.co.uk/communityfund/
